BTCPay Server on Shopify: how it works in 2026, and the catch

Myntli guide card: BTCPay Server on Shopify. How it works in 2026, and what it takes to set up.

BTCPay Server connects to Shopify through its Shopify plugin v2, installed as a custom app. You need at least the Basic Shopify plan, a Shopify Partner account and BTCPay Server 2.0.6 or later, and the server’s administrator has to switch the Shopify integration on. The catch: BTCPay doesn’t sit inside Shopify’s checkout. Customers choose a manual bitcoin payment method, place the order, and pay on the thank-you page.

Below: what you need, the setup in order, what your customers see, and the limits. From BTCPay’s Shopify v2 guide, checked on 30 September 2026. The original Shopify integration is closed to new users.

What you need

  • A Shopify store on the Basic plan or higher.
  • A Shopify Partner account, to create the app.
  • BTCPay Server 2.0.6 or later, with a store and a wallet, and the Shopify plugin v2.
  • Someone with admin access to the server, to switch on BTCPay’s Shopify integration. On a hosted BTCPay, that’s the host.

The setup, in order

  1. In Shopify’s Partner dashboard, create an app and note its client ID, secret and CLI token.
  2. On the server, the administrator enables BTCPay’s Shopify integration, a setting added over SSH.
  3. In BTCPay, install the Shopify plugin v2, enter the app’s details and click Deploy App.
  4. Install the app on your store from its custom distribution link.
  5. In Shopify’s checkout editor, add the BTCPay Checkout block to the thank-you page.
  6. Create a manual payment method with “bitcoin” or “btc” in its name, so BTCPay knows which orders are its own.

What your customers see

At checkout, the customer picks your bitcoin payment method and places the order as normal. The payment comes on the next screen: the thank-you page shows BTCPay’s checkout, with the QR code to scan. If they don’t pay, the order is voided and the stock goes back on sale.

The limits worth knowing

  • Payment comes after the order is placed, on the thank-you page, not inside Shopify’s own checkout.
  • One app serves one store, and that can’t be undone.
  • Refunds go out as a refund-claim link, which needs email set up on BTCPay and a webhook.
  • On a shared BTCPay host, the host has to switch the Shopify integration on for you.

Or have it done for you

Myntli does the server side and the wiring: your BTCPay store on our full bitcoin node, the Shopify integration switched on, the app deployed, and a real test order paid before you go live. $29 a month with no percentage, or $449 once to install it on your own server.

Questions people ask about BTCPay and Shopify

Can Shopify accept bitcoin through BTCPay?

Yes, with BTCPay’s Shopify plugin v2. Customers pick a bitcoin payment method at checkout and pay on the thank-you page, straight to your wallet.

What Shopify plan do I need for BTCPay?

At least the Basic Shopify plan. You also need a Shopify Partner account and BTCPay Server 2.0.6 or later.

Why does the payment happen after checkout?

BTCPay isn’t part of Shopify’s own checkout, so the order is placed with a manual payment method, and the bitcoin payment appears on the thank-you page.

What happens if a customer doesn’t pay?

The order is voided and the stock is returned.

Is BTCPay’s Shopify app free?

The plugin and BTCPay Server are free and take no percentage. You pay for the server BTCPay runs on, or for a host to run it.
